The Galesburg teachers' union are meeting with the school board again Tuesday afternoon. Union officials say both sides have made many concessions during negotiations that started in April. They have continued bargaining during this 13-day long strike and union officials say they are now down to one item that still requires an agreement. That is recall rights, which is how districts determine who to bring back when there are layoffs. Teachers say they want to ensure teachers are evaluated fairly and that the best teachers are retained, regardless of their salary and cost to the district.
The two sides have another meeting with the federal mediator Tuesday afternoon at 2:00. Not only is there pressure to get the students back to school and teachers back to work, but teachers' health insurance runs out this Sunday, August 31st. The sides are also determining how the missed school days will be made up.
