PEORIA - Runners had a beautiful morning for the annual Firecracker 5000.
Nearly 1,000 participants started their holiday running a 5k down by the Peoria riverfront.
Some were even donned in red, white and blue.
Organizers said they only had a little more than 300 runners signed up a week ago, but with the perfect weather, they saw a huge increase in the past few days.
“Oh my gosh. We could not have asked for a better day to kick, for Firecracker to kick off our beautiful Fourth of July. Everyone can have their run, go home, and then go on to their family activities,” Sarah Cole of the Peoria Jaycees said.
The Peoria Jaycees have put on the event for the past 33 years. All the proceeds go to charities like the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or the Greater Veteran Honor Flight.
