NORMAL - A local university is getting ready to light up the scoreboard at a national competition.

A team of nine students from Illinois State University is putting the finishing touches on its newest solar car model. Members are heading to Austin, Texas, for a laps competition, before taking the car on a 1,700 mile trek to Minnesota. And after finishing second last year, students are confident for a win.

"It would put ISU on the map for being kind of an engineering program, because we're an applied engineering program," said Nick Reichman, ISU senior. "So, it would put ISU on the map and hopefully, we would get more funds for more future projects for our car, for our team."

Team members say the car can exceed 65 miles per hour. This year's car is also lighter than in years past.
