Friends and family of fallen Pontiac police officer, Casey Kohlmeier, gather in Springfield today.

Illinois lawmakers are honoring the officer.

Casey Kohlmeier was killed on I-55 while on patrol with his K9 partner, Draco.

His car was in the median when it was struck by an alleged drunk driver.

I-55 between exits 197 and 202 will now be known as Officer Casey J. Kohlmeier Memorial Highway.

Kohlmeier’s family was at the capitol for the dedication and say it would have been a proud moment for him.

“He would be honored that people are recognizing him and law enforcement, not just him, for the work that they do every day, and more often than we realize or truly understand how they put their life on the line.”

Signs will soon be posted along I-55 in memory of the officer.

His family says they hope it will serve as a reminder to not drink and drive.
