PEORIA - The City of Peoria is finishing up construction on the Main-University project this week.

The final phase is the installation of four lighted crosswalks.

The city is installing the crosswalks on Main Street near Institute, Underhill, and Bradley Avenue.

City Engineer, Scott Reeise says there will be some lane closures as crews work on the crosswalks.

It's the final stage of the city's $2.6 million project.

The goal is to keep Main Street safer for pedestrians and Bradley students.

“Currently as students cross to go to campus or even pedestrians up in the area cross Main Street, nothing draws attention to them. So what these will do is they'll hit the button and they'll light up, so there is attention drawn to them as they cross the road,” said Reeise.

The city hopes to have the crosswalks finished by Saturday.
