Bartonville - Each year students at Limestone High School spend two weeks raising money for Easter Seals. In their thirty eighth campaign, they hoped to break 2013’s record of $59,000 dollars.

When their Easter Seals fundraiser began two weeks ago, Limestone students hoped to raise…

“$62,000; that was the big push. We wanted to break the record. We just barely missed it and got $55,000,” said Student Body President Connor Peacock.

But a couple of last-minute surprise donations pushed them over the top.

"We went in to it thinking we’d get $55,000 and ended up with $62,000. I can’t believe it.”

It’s the most Limestone has raised for Easter Seals since they began fundraising the organization in 1977. A friendly competition between the boys and girls helped raise the money. After being out-sold by the girls, the boys took a pie to the face.

“The girls won. But it doesn’t matter because we raised 62,000 for a good cause,” said student Cody Schooley.

But when you contribute to Easter Seals, which provides services for many local kids, everybody wins.

“It’s overwhelming,” said Easter Seals parent Christy Getz. “ My husband is a Limestone alum. We’ve always been involved with this. We’ve never been on the receiving end. These kids are amazing. It’s so nice to see kids, that are our future give so much.”

Christy’s daughter, Maggie, has received treatments from Easter Seals since she was three months old.

“It’s helped Maggie meet mile stones with speech, physical therapy and fine motor skills.”

“The money will go a long way in supporting these kids in a variety of programs. Autism programs, speech therapy, physical therapy; a whole variety of programs that are critically important to kids with developmental disabilities.”

Programs that allow kids like Maggie achieve huge accomplishments.
