PEORIA - A local author is shattering her silence about her abusive past.

Bloomington native Kelly Yordy said she was abused both sexually and mentally by a family member growing up.

She spent much of her adult life going through depression and even attempted suicide, but Yordy decided to put pen to paper and tell her story in her book “Shattering Silence.”

The book was just published this year. She said she wrote this book, partly to heal herself, but also to help others heal.

“I mainly tell people how they can, how they can become a survivor, you know, I know how it feels to be a victim,” Yordy said. “You still feel like you’re being abused, and I want people to break free of that”

Yordy will be in Peoria Heights on Saturday afternoon at I Know You Like A Book. She will be signing copies of her book from 2-4 p.m.
