PEORIA - Spring has finally sprung and one local club is taking the warm weather to heart with a festival.

It's called Maifest... the German celebration of spring.

Every year the German American Society of Peoria throws a Maifest party.

A German chorus, several German bands, even folk dancing make up this traditional celebration.

People passed around beer, schnitzel, and even authentic Bavarian pretzels.

Maifest organizers say it's the family atmosphere that keeps them busy year after year.

“It's a lot of fun. The music makes you happy. At least it makes me happy. That’s our whole goal, to continue to have that heritage and have that culture continues so that we don't forget it and we don't lose it” explains Co-chair Debbie Hedemann.

The German American society also gives German language lessons to keep its culture alive.
