PEORIA - Local organizations are stressing the importance of earthquake preparedness in light of California's quake. The 6.0 magnitude quake struck Sunday morning, sending hundreds of people to the hospital, but California is not the only state with earthquakes.

There are risks for that particular natural disaster right here in central Illinois.

That's why the Peoria County Health Department is participating in the Great ShakeOut" Oct. 16.

"It's basically just an opportunity for a local communities to have some discussion about earthquakes and what they can do to be better prepared for when an event of that nature occurs,” Jason Marks, the health department’s Emergency Preparedness Coordinator, said.

The event is meant for pretty much anyone: school groups, businesses, government agencies or even individual people.
