PEKIN - As we first reported on Tuesday, an Iowa man accused of attempting to lure a six year old child from a Pekin restaurant was released from jail on a notice to appear bond.

Pekin police issued a statement Wednesday, after they say they've received comments and concerns from the public that the man was released.

55-year old Thomas Anthony was picked up Monday after authorities say he approached a young boy at a Wal-Mart in Lincoln.
Pekin police sought Anthony as a person of interest after a Anthony allegedly attempted to lure the six-year old boy from a Pekin Hardee's. Three men saw what was happening and stepped in before anything happened.
Anthony was booked into the Tazewell County jail on a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge, but was released to appear back in court on September 17th.

In the statement, police say, "After speaking with the witnesses and all parties involved in the incident at Hardee's, the actions that took place did not rise to the level of the State statute for Attempted Child Abduction or for Luring a minor.  At no time did the suspect grab the child or forcefully escort the child from the store.  The suspect did not get out of the store before being stopped by three concerned citizens inside the story."

The statement goes on to say, "Our investigations Division did a detailed investigation, and discussed this case with the State's Attorney's office.  After going over the details of the case, as well as look again at the State Statutes, it was determined that no other charge but Disorderly Conduct could be charged.  The Pekin Police Department takes all allegations seriously, especially ones involving our children.  As Officers, we are parents as well and want our community to be safe.  We will work hard, and push forward to make sure that Pekin is always a safe place to live and raise our families."

The case remains under investigation by the State's Attorney's office.
