PEORIA - Peoria County is starting to raise money for what it's calling 'a final salute to veterans.'

Plans are drawn up for a new war memorial that will sit on the plaza of the Peoria County Courthouse. The wall will honor the names of soldiers who died serving in the Korean and Vietnam wars, and all the conflicts since.

Peoria County Clerk, Steve Sonnemaker said sometimes these wars can be forgotten or overshadowed by earlier conflicts in history, so that’s why it’s important to honor the men and women who died fighting.

"We did not want to have any of our veterans go unrecognized for their service particularly when you have, like I said, over 106 veterans from Peoria County alone that lost their lives during this era," Sonnemaker said.

Sonnemaker said he wants to raise $5,000 within the next year to pay for the memorial with hopes to dedicate the memorial on Veterans Day of 2014.
