PEORIA - A new site to house homeless American veterans held its grand opening this week in Peoria.

Monday marked the official opening of a new residential home for veterans.

The site is run by the South Side Office of Concern with oversight from the Veteran’s Administration.

The new site is larger than the previous one and is able to provide food and housing for 15 servicemen.

Since Monday, they've had 5 of their beds filled.

House management says they fill a growing need in the community.

Jeff Gress, the VP of the South Side Office of Concern says, "It is good that the VA recognizes that they need to do something to help them. So I think to be a part of that, to be able to help people turn their lives around, I think is really valuable."

All applicants must be referred to the house by the VA.

The group encourages any veteran in need of help to contact a Veterans Outreach Representative.
