PEORIA - A local hospital is leading the way when it comes to organ donation.

OSF Saint Francis is recognized as the leading organ donor hospital for Illinois in 2013. They were presented with a plaque for their accomplishment by Secretary of State Jesse White Today. With the help of Gift of Hope, the hospital utilized 24 organ donors to save 77 lives in Central Illinois this past year. That’s the most out of the 185 hospitals Gift of Hope works with in Illinois and Indiana.

“Organ donation in particular only happens in certain types of tragic deaths. These are primarily people who suffered a tramatic head injury and have become brain dead. So they are still heart beating and their organs are viable. So thank God those incidents are relatively rare,” said President and CEO of Gift of Hope.

The ceremony is part of Organ Donor Awareness Month
