Steffen made the announcement Wednesday. He says he’s discussed his retirement with management for about a year.
He began his career at the hospital, which as Vice President back in 1980. In 1996, he became the President and CEO.
Steffen pioneered many new projects at OSF Saint Francis such as being the first in the state to buy a CT scanner.
He says he's sad to leave, but he is grateful that he was a part of notable medical advances and multi-million dollar building projects.
“I was here in an era of a lot of new growth for high technology,” Steffen says.
“A lot of new technology was coming on the scene and I’m thankful that I was a part of a team that took advantage of that.”
Steffen says he doesn't believe there will be a need for a national search to fill his position. He and both of his most recent predecessors were internally promoted.
Steffen plans to travel spend more time with his children and 14 grandkids. He says he may also take part in some mission work.
