The Pekin Fire Department parks its trucks around crosswalks to draw attention to drivers that school is back in session.
The department plans on placing vehicles near 11 elementary schools.
This is the 8th year students are welcomed by firefighters.
"We're going to be out here every year just to make sure that everybody does slow down,” Pekin Police Chief Kurt Nelson said. “Also to make sure they put their cell phones away in and around schools whenever they're driving. So they can stay aware and make sure all the kids stay safe.”
Pekin Police will also increase patrols in school zones.
