PEORIA - The Peoria International Airport is flying to new heights.

A new Florida destination was announced today.

That makes three flights from the River City to the Sunshine State,

“It's a destination we hear a lot from people. People request and say hey, I'd really like to go to Orlando. How come you don't have Orlando flights?”

Olson says they factored in the success of Allegiant Airlines’ four other Peoria connections. As well was the leisure travel market in the River City when making the addition.

Peoria's airport set a record for the number of travelers in each of the last four years.

Olson believes the addition of Orlando will help them continue a record-setting 2014.

“We're always above average on the profitability scales and we're always below average on the cost scales. So we're a good place for them to do business.”

Allegiant Air also fits into the future plans of the Peoria International Airport. We reported last week it’s looking to replace some of the 50 passenger planes with 70 or 90 passenger planes in order to save on fuel.

“And that's their business model; to fly the larger aircraft and do it on less than a daily service basis,” explained Olson. “Eighty percent of the traffic is Peoria people going back and forth. And 20 percent of the traffic is Orlando people going back and forth.”

The Peoria Airport might soon be making additional flights.

It’s applied for a $500,000 grant from the state to help put destinations in New York, Charlotte, Houston, Philadelphia and Washington D.C.

You can reserve your flight to Orlando now for a special low rate. The direct flights to Orlando begin on November 14th.

The airport will learn if they’ve been selected for the grant on September 30th.
