One local group is trying to change Peoria’s wasteful ways.
Keep Peoria Beautiful is using a three pronged approach... electronics, tires, and trash.
"It’s just a great way to clean up the city, make it more attractive, cleaner, greener."
More than two hundred volunteers worked to clean-up Peoria. Tires were the largest item.
"They don't know how to properly dispose of them, don't want to pay the fee, whatever, and they illegally dump them" explained Vice President Steve Dunham.
Last year, the cleanup took in more than two thousand tires. They surpassed that number by nine am. Before the day ended, more than three thousand tires will go to the recycler.
"We have been overwhelmed with tires. You can't believe how many tires there are. People just throw them in ditches, or ravines, or alleys" said President Sue Blanton.
Volunteers helped because they want everyone to be proud of the place they call home.
"That’s the way my momma raised me. You don't live in trash."
Helping beautify, block after block... because every little bit helps.
"People don't understand that littering is just not acceptable. They just have to change their behavior. You just can't be throwing things out on the ground all of the time" said Blanton
This is the 16th time keep Peoria beautiful has put on a cleanup. Next year’s cleanup will also be at the end of April.
