PEORIA - If you’ve recently received a call from the IRS, it could be a scam.
The Better Business Bureau says Central Illinois residents are being contracted by a scammer claiming to be from the IRS.
The call comes in the form of an automated message.
It says you are past due on taxes and may be arrested if you don’t pay up, but the BBB determined it to be a scam.
“The phone number that appears on someone’s caller ID appears to be from an 800 (number) or customer service number,” said Jessica Tharp, Vice President of the Central Illinois Better Business Bureau. “If you think that you owe money to the IRS or you know that you owe money to the IRS, you need to contact the IRS directly. They're not going to call you and offer to take payment information”
Here is a transcript of the call: “Hello. This is an important message, so please listen to the message carefully. This is the final notification call from the IRS. There is a scrutiny going under your name with the Department of Internal Revenue Services. So as soon as you receive this message, to return the call you can reach a live agent at 888-775-1591. If we don’t hear from you within the next 12 hours, this would be taken against you in the courthouse, and an arrest warrant would be issued against your name.
