PEORIA – The city of Peoria and District 150 may have a solution for what to do with the former Washington school on Moss Avenue. One proposal was presented at a community meeting tonight.
The Montessori Children’s House of Peoria wants to buy the building. The head of the School, John Meredith Cox, spoke at Wednesday night’s meeting. He explained the school’s vision for the property and what its presence would add to the area.
City Councilman Chuck Grayeb said he hasn’t heard any negatives about the plan from neighborhoods residents.
The Montessori school currently rents its space and educates about 75 students. It said the old school that is for sale would be the perfect place to continue to grow in.
Meredith Cox said, “So being a part of the West Bluff, being close to the historic downtown Peoria, and the river, it is really key and important thing to us. We want our kids to be able to take walking trips downtown, we want to get them involved in the community."
Grayeb added, “We want to be sure we have a stable anchor, not some development that will go away in a just a few years and then we have a building again sitting right in the middle of the West Bluff that needs to be filled."
The property is part of a national and local historic district. District 150 is asking a minimum price of $150,000.
The city council and school board will have the final decision on the proposal.
