PEKIN - The Powerton coal-fired power plant in Pekin is getting an upgrade.
The plant, along with several others owned by NRG Energy will be retrofitted to meet clean air standards set by the federal government.
The plan will reduce greenhouse and toxic gasses emitted by the plant by up to 90%.
The move does have a downside however.
NRG says up to 250 jobs will be eliminated state-wide with most of those coming from the south suburbs of Chicago.
