Red Cross Heartland Heroes Winners Announced

BLOOMINGTON - The American Red Cross has announced its 2013 Heroes of the Heartland award winners.

They'll be honored at the McLean County "Saluting our Heroes" breakfast in November.

The event recognizes those who've gone above and beyond to serve their community.

Those being honored include Sergeant Anthony Maddox.

The young soldier passed away while serving in Afghanistan this summer.

Hudson firefighter Chris Brown is also being honored.

He passed away on duty while helping citizens along the highway last spring.

Brown has been chosen to receive the Public Service Hero Award.

Joey Monahan will receive the Good Samaritan Award.

21 Heartland Community College students will receive the Ambassador Award for their efforts to help victims of Hurricane Sandy.

Sergeant Anthony Maddox is getting the Armed Forces Award.

The late Jim Scharer will receive the "Paula Walsh" Award for his volunteer efforts.

The Youth Award goes to Maggie Schopp who took action for the Children's Hospital of Illinois in Peoria.

Hailey Nelson will be presented with the Health and Safety Award.
