PEORIA - A retired NYPD officer and 9-11 first responder is in Central Illinois.
He's being honored at the Marshall-Putnam County Fair in Henry this weekend.
Dave Martinez and his sons arrived in Peoria from New York Friday morning.
He's one of the most awarded New York police officers and has received praises from the White House.
In 1997, he shot two terrorists trying to blow up a New York subway station.
Three years ago he visited Henry for the Central Illinois 10 year, 9-11 memorial ceremony.
Now, he's back to be honored for his hard work.
“You never think that you make that much of an impact in life,” Martinez said. “And yet, apparently, I've made a big impact in different places. Whether it was work, friendships, you know? And this is another extension of that.”
Martinez will receive special recognition Saturday at the Marshall Putnam Fair in Henry.
He'll be the special guest at America's Pull National Tractor pulling contest that takes place at 6 PM.
