PEORIA - Richwoods High School JROTC students got to take their studies out of the classroom and above the Illinois River Wednesday.

A CH47 helicopter from a local Army National Guard touched down on the Richwoods High School athletic field.

JROTC students got a chance to take a look at the chopper.

32 cadets even got a chance to take a ride over the Illinois River.

The helicopter, seen as the workhorse for army troops and cargo, helps the students better familiarize what the CH47 can really do in the air.

“There's nothing like actually getting on an airplane and going up and feeling that exhilaration, said Senior Marine Instructor Mark Johnson.”We can talk about it in the classroom, tell them about our own experiences, but when we can give them their personal experience then that really means a lot to them and really opens their eyes to all the opportunities they can have.”

The crew from the familiarization flight recently returned from a deployment in Afghanistan.
