BLOOMINGTON- District 87 students and staff have been at school several days, but Friday morning they celebrated their new year with the community.

More than 400 students at Sheridan Elementary School in Bloomington participated in the school's annual back to school parade.

The theme was Kindness counts, pass it on.

Dozens of community members, including the Bloomington Fire and Police departments, came out to show their support.

Organizers say it's a great way for kids to march into the new year.

"The kids love it because they like seeing the community members out there, their parents out there. Just feeling like they're a part of Sheridan, having that ownership is huge for them," said Jenifer McGowan, Principal of Sheridan Elementary School.

This was the 23rd year for the parade.

It's a tradition the whole community enjoys.
