NORMAL - Friday night, Special Olympic athletes had a chance to celebrate the introduction of this year's Summer Games.

Special Olympics Illinois held opening ceremonies inside Hancock Stadium on Illinois State University's campus.

Athletes paraded around the stadium for fans and coaches.

Special Olympics Illinois says the opening ceremonies are meant to pump up the athletes before they compete.

"Tracy Hilliard of Special Olympics Illinois said, "For them to have a crowd to come in front of and just to cheer for them, and then for the staff and volunteers to be able to see that, it just makes everything worth while. They're just so happy."

The games run until Noon on Sunday.
