WASHINGTON - A local disaster relief effort will close its doors.

The Central Illinois Churches of Christ Resource Center in downtown Washington is open for the last time Saturday August 9th from 10 until 2.

The center was staffed by volunteers from Eureka, Peoria and East Peoria the past several months and helped more than 800 families in the aftermath of the November tornados.

The center provided food, clothing, beds, and even large appliances to area residents.

The group estimates they gave away more than half a million dollars in physical assistance to residents of Tazewell county.

Organizers say they are thankful for the opportunity to serve.

Dean Kennedy, the group’s Media Coordinator said "We wanted to be able to comfort people. Not just with food and physical things, hopefully we helped them in an emotional way. In a time when their family needed it, they had somebody to talk to."

Organizers say it was a privilege to help Central Illinois through the difficult time after the November tornados.

They say if an area resident is in need of assistance, their churches are always willing to lend a helping hand.

They encourage anyone to contact their three local locations listed below.
