BLOOMINGTON- Monday marked the first day of school for Peoria District 150 and Mclean County's Unit 5.

We met up with the new Unit 5 Superintendent on his first day.

He visited several schools, including Pepper Ridge Elementary.

The district's Promise Council greeted students with leis for the "Ride the Wave to Success" program.

New Superintendent Doctor Mark Daniel was there giving students words of encouragement.

School officials say it's a great way to kick off the new year and hope it inspires students to do well in school.

"Seeing people, adults, caring adults, welcoming each student as they are coming into the building that's, that's special. The kids, their smiles were all worth it," said Dr. Mark Daniel, Unit 5 Superintendent.

Kids at Pepper Ridge also got to celebrate the end of the first day with a hula dance.
