Pekin - The Tazewell County Board voted tonight to cap a vacated Pekin landfill
The measure was approved by 18 votes to 2.
Landfill owners abandoned the site nearly 20 years ago, and those supporting the cap are afraid toxins from the landfill could enter a nearby water source.
That is unless the board members are willing to pay to cover about half of the 43 acres.
The cost of the project is more than $3 million.
Officials say the board will have to support the clay covering either tonight or down the road when the problem becomes serious.
They don’t think there is a threat to contaminate the water at this point. The move to cover the landfill would be precautionary.
The state has told officials in Pekin it can’t afford to foot the bill to cover the landfill.
