Although Lieutenant Colonel Mark Johnson is retired, he continues to serve. He is the senior Marine Corps instructor for the J.R.O.T.C. program at Richwoods High School. Johnson is a Purple Heart recipient for an arm injury he suffered during a deployment to Iraq.

He is so humble about his service, not even his students know much about his military background. What they do know is that he principles and leadership skills he teaches he lives out every day.

He provides cadets with hands on training, like building houses for habitat for humanity or a ride in a Chinook helicopter. These experiences have helped the program grow and students say Johnson is their hero. His dedication has propelled many students to lead successful careers in and out of the military.
