WMBD/WYZZ-TV - MACKINAW, Ill. - Coach Job Linboom expects his Dee-Mack Chiefs to be big underdogs this season, but he said he expects his team to improve upon last year's 2-7 record.

The Chiefs return only seven starters from that team, and Linboom said he anticipates as many as ten sophomores will fill starting roles at times this season. But he said his sophomores are ready to make a statement.

"Part of it is because our junior and senior classes are so small, but part of it is that our sophomore class is really good," Linboom said. "So I think those guys will be able to fend well for themselves, even at the varsity level."

Even the upperclassmen are embracing the youth of the team. Senior offensive lineman Lane Jones said he has the same optimism as he would on a team full of seniors.

"My expectations don't change at all," Jones said. "We have underclassmen guys I think could fill a leadership role."

The Chiefs begin their season on the road against Momence Aug. 29.
