WMBD/WYZZ-TV - PEORIA, Ill. - Cardinals prospect Alex Reyes is a hard-throwing right-hander from New Jersey. Like every Chief, his dream is to play for the St. Louis Cardinals. But his journey to the minor leagues differs from those of his American teammates - Reyes never went through the MLB First-Year Player Draft.

Instead of entering the draft after high school or college, the 19-year-old left the United States after his junior year of high school to play a year of pro ball in the Dominican Republic, where he lived with his grandmother. Reyes then signed with St. Louis as an international free agent in December 2012. He said moving to the Caribbean gave him the chance to work on his game year-round and catch the eyes of professional scouts.
