PEORIA, IL - Arturo Reyes went the first five-plus innings of shutout ball for the Peoria Chiefs and Ronald Castillo's one-out double in the seventh led to the game's first run as the Chiefs defeated the Cedar Rapids Kernels 2-0 on Wednesday morning. The Chiefs have won three in a row and move to 11-7 on the season.
Reyes was only in trouble in the second and sixth innings. In the second he gave up back-to-back one-out singles, but got a strike-him-out, throw-him-out double play. The first two got on in the sixth on a single and sac bunt that Reyes misfielded for an error, but Blake McKnight came in and got three straight outs to end the inning.
The scoreless tie was finally broken in the seventh inning. Ronald Castillo laced a double in the right-center gap with one out, giving the Chiefs their first hit of the game. Mason Katz hit a grounder to short which was thrown away and Castillo advanced to third. Steve Bean then hit a grounder to short, too slowly to turn the double play and Castillo came in with the run
The Chiefs added a run in the eighth when Cesar Valera ripped the first pitch to the wall in left for a double. He got to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch as the Chiefs left the bases loaded.
Reyes pitched the first five-plus innings allowing three hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Blake McKnight (1-0) went the next two innings giving up a hit with a strikeout and a walk for the win. Kyle Barraclough pitched the eighth, working around a two-out single and getting two strikeouts for his second hold. Chris Thomas pitched a perfect ninth for his third save.
