Chiefs win series in Beloit

WMBD/WYZZ-TV STAFF - BELOIT, WI - The Peoria Chiefs scored five times in the first three innings and cruised to a 6-2 victory over the Beloit Snappers on Saturday afternoon. The win gives the Chiefs a 2-1 start to the season as they take the three game road series in Wisconsin. After an off day on Sunday the Chiefs host Quad Cities Monday night at 6:30.

The Chiefs wasted no time in grabbing the lead for the third straight game. Zeke DeVoss led off the game with a double to centerfield and moved to third on a groundout by Wes Darvill. DeVoss was out in a rundown on a grounder by Marco Hernandez but stayed alive long enough for Hernandez to take second base. Paul Hoilman gave the Chiefs a 1-0 lead with a single to center for his second RBI of the season.

Beloit tied the game in the bottom of the first as Eddie Rosario hit a two-out solo home run off Chiefs starter Jose Rosario. The homer was the second of the season for Beloit and the first for Rosario who hit 21 last year in the Appalachian Rookie League.

The Chiefs took advantage of some wildness from Beloit starter Tim Shibuya in the top of the second to take the lead for good. Eduardo Gonzalez led off with a single and moved to second on a hit by Brad Zapenas. Taylor Davis reached on an error by Rosario at second base to load the bases and Pin-Chieh Chen drew a walk to put the Chiefs up 2-1. DeVoss was hit by a pitch to force home another run and after a groundout, Marco Hernandez delivered a sacrifice fly for a 4-1 Chiefs lead.

The Chiefs added another run in the third inning against Sibuya. With two down Zapenas singled to center and he scored easily as Taylor Davis doubled to the wall in right field. The double was the first hit and RBI of the season for Davis and gave the Chiefs a 5-1 lead.

Peoria connected on the first home run of the season in the fifth inning as Gonzalez led off with a solo shot to straight away center. The blast gave the Chiefs a 6-2 lead and marked the first career home run for Gonzalez who had 319 at-bats the last three seasons in the Dominican Summer League and Arizona Rookie League.

Rosario (1-0) picked up the win allowing two runs on two hits over 5 1/3 innings. He walked three, hit one and struck out two. Yao-Lin Wang hit two batters but did not allow a hit or run in 1 2/3 innings while striking out two. Austin Reed threw a 1-2-3 eighth inning and Andrew McKirahan retired the Snappers in order in the ninth.
