Dunlap Girls Ready To Add To Trophy Case

Cross Country Hopes For State Title

DUNLAP, Ill. - The Dunlap girls cross country team has a chance to do something fun.

Last year's Class 2A state runner-up returns six of its top seven runners in 2017 and will be considered a state title favorite. The Eagles could follow the track team's state championship with one of their own in cross country.

"We haven't said anything but I know in our hearts we think we are able to achieve it," said senior Ayah Aldadah. "And I think all the girls are ready for the season."

Cross country practice started around the state on Wednesday. The Eagles bring back their top four performers from 2016, including their No. 1 runner Franny Verville.

"That would be a dream come true, if we could do that again," Verville said of a state cross country title just months after winning one in track.

Verville, Abby Johnson, Aldadah and Katie Piper give Dunlap a strong top four to open the season. The Eagles only graduated one runner from last year, Jena Brooks.

"It's a long season so we are going to try and not keep our hopes up and maybe not put so much expectation on ourselves," said Verville, who's entering her senior year. "That would be pretty cool if we could do that."
