Illini Favorites Start Strong at John Deere Classic

WMBD/WYZZ-TV - SILVIS, Ill. - A guys from the state of Iowa is in the lead but the four players representing the University of Illinois got off to pretty good starts at the John Deere Classic Thursday.

Iowa City native Zach Johnson fired an 8-under-par 63 and is part of a three-way tie for the lead at the JDC. Rory Sabatini and Brian Harman share the opening round lead with Johnson, the 2012 champion. 

Former Illini Steve Stricker carded a first round 68 (-3) and is five shots off the lead. Fellow Illinois golfers Luke Guthrie and Scott Langley are just one shot behind Stricker after each 69. 

D.A. Points, an Illinois product from nearby Pekin, Illinois, is eight shots back of the lead after his opening round 71.
