Illinois receives #7 seed in NCAA Tournament

WMBD/WYZZ-TV STAFF - CHAMPAIGN - The University of Illinois men's basketball team received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament on Sunday evening. Illinois (22-12) is the No. 7 seed in the East Region and will face No. 10 seed Colorado in the second round on Friday, March 22, in Austin, Texas. Tip off time is scheduled for 3:40 PM.
This marks the 30th NCAA appearance for the Fighting Illini, who are 39-30 all-time in tournament games. Illinois is 3-1 against Colorado in its history, knocking off the Buffaloes 86-68 in Denver on Dec. 30, 1987, 69-65 in Champaign on Jan. 31, 1987, and 64-46 in Champaign on Dec. 16, 1957. CU's lone win came on Dec. 12, 1960 in Boulder, 90-81.
Since the NCAA Tournament expanded to include 68 teams in 2011, the Tuesday and Wednesday night (March 19-20) games in Dayton, Ohio, are now known as the first round. The Thursday and Friday matchups in the Round of 64 are known as the second round.
Illinois is one of seven Big Ten Conference schools to earn an NCAA Tournament bid, joining Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State and Wisconsin.
