WMBD/WYZZ-TV - PEORIA, Ill. - As Matt Lavery looks ahead to the start his college golf career, he is somewhat motivated by what happened at the end of his high school career.

Lavery still thinks about the putt he missed on the final hole of last fall's state championships. His Dunlap High School team finished second by a stroke.

"That putt still weighs on me a bit," said Lavery. "Someone once told me golf is a process. Everytime you go out there you have to learn something different and be able to build on it."

Lavery had a decorated high school career, finishing second individually as a junior and seventh as a senior. Not bad for a guy who had no intentions of playing prep golf.

"I went into m freshman year thinking I was going to play football, not golf," Lavery said. "But I met some guys on the team and they convinced me to play."

That decision to play golf turned out to be significant. Lavery has earned a scholarship to play collegiately at Drake University, the college home of former Masters champ Zach Johnson.

"I'd love to meet him," Lavery said. "Just to pick his brain a little bit. So I'm looking forward to being able have that opportunity. That would help me greatly."

Lavery has played all over the state this summer. He's hoping the experience at state last fall motivates him to play solid golf out of the state in college.

"Right now, I'm excited to see what it's all about," said Lavery. "Start going at it."
