Lions Ready To Roar Again In 2017

Boot Camp: Peoria High

Peoria, Ill. - The state champs are glad to be back on the field.

They may look like the 2016 Class 5A champions but these Lions say they've closed the book on last year and are ready to write a new chapter.

"Each year has tried to build off the last, that's the culture right now," said Peoria High coach Tim Thornton. "How, as a 2017 team, can we be better than the 2016 team was on a daily basis at practice. How do we do that?"

Peoria High scored more points than any team in state history last season (850). The Lions return their All-State quarterback Coran Taylor and 2,000-yard rusher Geno Hess.

Plus they add transfer Fred Dixson, who rushed for over 2,0000 yards and scored 31 TD's last year at Notre Dame.

"Coming to a new team, I'm not going to put myself higher than anyone else because I had a good year last year," said Dixson. "I'm still going to play as if I want to earn a starting spot."

Taylor, who already has committed to the University of Illinois, loves having multiple weapons in his offense again.

"We've got a lot of guys around me that can get it done," Taylor said. "This year, it isn't going to be about me so much. More about the other guys."

And the Lions like the other guys with whom they've surrounded their stars. And if the stars align properly, the explosive Lions could be playing again for a state title.

"I don't see any reason we don't go out and compete on the same level," Thornton said. "A lot of things have to go right. But the bar is just different than it used to be."
