WMBD/WYZZ-TV - METAMORA, Ill. - The Redbird baseball team can trace its success to good pitching, timely hitting and solid defense.

Oh, and Metamora would like to add Yu-Gi-Oh! to that list. Yu-Gi-Oh! is a Japanese card game the players have enjoyed playing throughout the season.

"Honestly, what's brought us together is the Yu-Gi-Oh!. That's what we've been playing a lot," said junior Ethan Skender. "It's bringing us together as a team. I love this team, I think we really can win it all."

All kidding aside, Metamora is enjoying its deepest baseball run in school history. The Redbirds will play Lemont at 10 a.m Friday in the Class 3A state semifinals inside Joliet's Silver Cross Field.

"Never been to two sectionals, never won a sectional until last year, never won a super-sectional," said senior Brendan Nachtrieb. "Doing that in a span of two years, then finishing it off this year and getting to Joliet, really means a lot to this program and a lot to us. We've been playing together since we were five and six years old. We knew our whole lives we could get here and it's finally coming true."
