METAMORA, Ill. - Something funny happened on Ethan Poston's way to becoming on of the state's top high jumpers.
He became a conference champion long jumper.
"Coach (Chuck) Danner told me I could long jump well because I can high jump well," said Poston. "He was right."
The veteran Metamora coach convinced Poston that he could excel in the long jump. He only competed in three meets this season yet was the Mid-Illini Conference long jump champ.
"Early on he was only a high jumper," Danner said of Poston. "Now he's a really good track athlete.
That make it more fun, he's having more fun."
The senior jumper looks like he's always having fun on the track. He's usually smiling.
And when he's not jumping, he's changing his shoes.
"I go to high jump and put on shoes, go to long jump and have to put on a different pair," said Poston. "I'm always changing shoes."
Funny thing is Poston is wearing the same shoes today that he wore when he first jumped for Metamora High School as a freshman.
"The high jump ones have tears in them and everything. They are sentimental to me," Poston admitted. "I can't get rid of them. They are good luck."
He's made every jump of his high school career in those shoes. He hopes they take him to a state medal next week.
