Potters Hoping Gameball Run Breaks Fundraising Record

Extra Effort: Morton basketball

MORTON, Ill. - Brody Woods and his Morton High School teammates are a couple weeks away from their final postseason run.

But before regionals, the Potters prepare for the program's signature event.

"When it started, there wasn't a ton of buzz around it, but now, everyone knows Morton goes the Gameball Run," said senior Brody Woods.

The Gameball Run, a fundraiser in its fifth year, benefits the Children's Hospital of Illinois. It includes a visit by the team and culminates with a massive two-day event, beginning with a race on the high school track.

"Hundreds of people running," said Morton basketball coach Jarrett Brown. "It's just an environment that gives you chills when you see it and when you participate in it."

The game itself tips off the following night.

The upperclassmen on this Morton team have had some great experiences here in the Potterdome. But they tell me the excitement that surrounds the Gameball Run each year ranks right up there with the overtimes, the comebacks and the buzzer-beaters."

"It's one of the top memories I have playing basketball," said Woods. 'I've played three sports, but this is one of the top for sure, and looking back and seeing something I was able to do this young, hopefully I'll be able to do something like this in the future."

Dan Molloy/WMBD Sports: The highlight of the night comes before the opening tip. Last season, Coach Jarrett Brown presented a check for more than 60 thousand dollars. This year's event will likely shatter that record.

Jarrett Brown/Morton Head Coach: "We've all been given gifts and talents, and we have to give them away. They're not just for us to keep and self-serve."

It's a message of selflessness Morton players say they will spread to others in the future.

"It's a life-changing experience, honestly, because it puts your life into perspective," said senior Bryce Brekke. "A lot of us don't have to deal with the problems those kids do, so to do this for those kids is really something special."
