WMBD/WYZZ-TV - NORMAL, Ill. -- The biggest high school football game in central Illinois Friday may be one of the biggest games in the state.
Normal West (5-0) travels to undefeated Normal Community (5-0) for the lead in the Big 12 Conference. And for bragging rights in the Twin Cities.
"A lot of friends vs friends, enemies vs enemies," said West quarterback Alex Jefferson. "A lot of guys we went to school with since we've grown up. I's going to be a battle between two crosstown rivals."
West, which beat NCHS last season, is ranked fourth in the Class 6A state poll. The Ironmen are ranked seventh in the Class 7A poll.
The game's hype and importance is surpassing the annual week two showdown between Normal Community and Bloomington in the Intercity doubleheader played before huge crowds at Illinois State's Hancock Stadium..
"It's another game," said Normal Community lineman Jamal Thomas. "But week two Intercity has nothing on this game Friday. It's going to be a big one."
