WMBD/WYZZ-TV - PEORIA, Ill. -- Last month Rocky Vonachen didn't want to talk about the future of the Peoria Chiefs.
He couldn't because of baseball's rules.
Now he'll talk all day about his team's new four-year Player Development Contract with the St. Louis Cardinals. He says the fans were urging he return to a partnership with the Redbirds after word leaked out in August the Cubs were going to leave Peoria.
"When this all started several weeks ago, that the Cubs could possibly move, everywhere I went I had Cardinals and Cubs fans saying, 'Get the Cardinals. We need the Cardinals back.' That was our goal that they'd come back," said Chiefs president Rocky Vonachen.
The Chiefs were the Class A Midwest League affiliate of the Cardinals from 1995-2004. The past eight years, the Chiefs have been a Chicago Cubs affiliate.
Cardinals front office personnel will travel to Peoria to make an official announcement Tuesday.
