BLOOMINGTON - One alum has been part of Illinois Wesleyan’s homecoming celebration for years, even after he died in combat overseas.

Captain Ryan Beaupre graduated from IWU in 1995, and then worked briefly for State Farm in Bloomington before enlisting in the Marines.

He became a helicopter pilot, and was deployed for Operation Iraqi Freedom. Beaupre died in March of 2003, when his helicopter crashed on his second day.

That fall, Wesleyan renamed its 5K walk and run and set up a scholarship fund in his honor. It's a tradition that brings back many alumni each year.

"That's really nice to have them. They're very enthusiastic and just everybody who knew Ryan said he was outstanding and that's why we do this, to keep the memory of Ryan close to our heart.")>>

Registration for the run continues until it begins Saturday at 8:15 a.m. registration is $30, and goes to the Ryan Beaupre Memorial Scholarship Fund.
