A Smoother Drive in Pekin’s Future

City looking to upgrade two major roads
PEKIN – Two of Pekin’s main streets could be up for major upgrades.

Front Street between Fayette Street and Distillery Road runs along the river and is heavily used by semi trucks. The city says the crumbling stretch of road needs to be widened to support the business needs in that area. It's still working on that project, which is predicted to cost about $6-million.

Court Street between Fifth Street and Veterans Drive needs construction by the way of pavement, curbs and sidewalks. The city council passed an agreement with an engineering company Monday to start the design process. Eventually it will become a city street instead of a state highway. The money for that project will have to come out of the same pot as the $30-million in state funds for the Veteran’s Drive expansion, which is underway.
