Bag Check in Changes Coming to Local Airport

BLOOMINGTON– The Central Illinois Regional Airport is in the midst of a facility upgrade.

Changes to bag check-in are coming to Bloomington’s Central Illinois Regional Airport.

Recently work began on a nine million dollar project to expand the facility's first floor.

The upgrade will automate the process for checked bags and create more space for passengers.

Currently, luggage scanners can be found in front of the airport ticket counters.

When the project is done they'll be moved behind check-in, allowing items to be sent on a conveyer belt.

"We're going to make a much more efficient system that's going to be back behind the ticket counter so when you come in and check in the airline folks will take your bag and it will be processed in a whole new area of the terminal behind you,” explained CIRA spokeswoman Fran Strebing.

The multi-million dollar project is funded by the Transportation Security Administration and the Bloomington Airport.

Work should be complete by next fall.
