Bloomington To Adopt 'Pay as You Throw' Garbage System

BLOOMINGTON - Bloomington residents will soon have a new way to pay for their trash.
BLOOMINGTON - Bloomington residents will soon have a new way to pay for their trash.

After weeks of debate, council approved a “pay as you throw” system, which will gradually increase residents rates, if they throw away a larger amount of trash on a weekly basis.

City leaders say the move will help make up a $2.1 million solid waste shortfall.

People with 35 gallon containers are paying $16 a month for the next three years.

If you have a 65 gallon container you're amount increases over the next three years going from $18 to $20, then $21.

If you have a 95 gallon, you'll pay $20, $23, and then $25 a month.

Council also set the property tax levy for 20-14, which is steady with this years' and approved a 30-thousand dollar study for the feasibility of a hotel in the downtown area.

Bloomington council will meet again next week.
