BLOOMINGTON - A Bloomington woman, convicted of DUI will spend the next 12 years behind bars.

Twenty-five-year-old Katie Lawson was convicted of aggravated DUI and leaving the scene of an accident involving death in June of 2012.

The hit and run accident killed twenty 21-year-old Eastern Illinois University student Lauren Leffler of Bloomington.

Authorities claim Lawson was driving with a suspended license and didn't slow down to avoid the accident.

Prosecutors say Lawson lied to police the night of the incident. After a final day, featuring about three hours of witness statements and testimony, the judge says he hopes Lawson’s sentencing sets an example for others.
