Central Peoria Neighborhood Shaken Up After Shooting

PEORIA - A man was sent to the hospital Thursday afternoon following a shooting in Central Peoria, leaving neighbors on edge.

Police say the victim is in serious condition, but stable. People in the neighborhood off of North Sheridan road say this kind of gun violence isn't normal for their block.
Many said it means they'll double check their locks tonight before they go to sleep.

"One of the young men walked the alley and said someone's lying in the alley. That's how we knew somebody had got shot," said Brian Faulkner, who was taking care of his elderly mother on West MacQueen Avenue when they heard the gunshot.

"Sounded like a car backfiring, but we noticed it wasn't backfiring because all the kids took off running,” Faulkner said.

Moments later, police swarmed the area, blocking off their street and the alley that runs between the houses.

"We have a male who was shot at least one time in the torso area," said Lieutenant Michael Mushinsky.

Lieutenant Mushinsky said the man was shot with a shotgun, then made his way through the alley to the space behind the Sheridan Food Mart where he dropped to the ground, unconscious. Some of his clothes were left behind after the paramedics loaded him into an ambulance.

Because the crime scene is so large, a K9 unit was brought in to help the search.

"Trying to find any evidence that may be laying in the bushes or the grass," Mushinsky explained.

Faulkner said this violence happened in a space people use as a neighborhood shortcut, one that they might think twice about walking through in the future.

"People use that alley every day to walk back and forth to the little store here. Especially the kids," he said.

Initial reports said a blue car took off from the crime scene.  Police say they are still investigating that tip and haven’t made any arrests yet.
