A Different Move Out: ISU Helps Students Be Greener

NORMAL - The end of ISU’s semester is here and local organizations are working to reduce student move out waste.

As a part of “Operation Move-Out”, The Ecology Action Center, Home Sweet Home Ministries, Recycling Furniture for Families, and ISU Community Outreach have joined forces to divert reusable items from being discarded in the trash.

Each spring thousands of pounds of items such as clothes and non-perishable food are thrown away. Organizers are encouraging students to donate those items instead. The Ecology Action Center has set up a website for students to schedule pick up times for their unwanted items. There are also collection bins at various locations across campus.

"We're talking about a variety of things. Everything from reusable furniture to clothing, textiles, linens, towels all in useable or gently used condition,” said Michael Brown, Executive Director at Ecology Action Center.

The ISU move out donations initiative will run until next Monday.
